Season of Gigs!

05th April 2012

It’s festival season!  And that means that I’m going to be through the roof, all out busy!

In addition to the regular festivals and gigs that make up this time of year, we added a summer Accidental Circus tour in May and oh yeah, Paolo (Jester of England & Accidental Circus Director) and Onca (Mezmer Society Songstress & Bellydancer, ABSFest Producer, & Accidental Circus Co-Founder) are getting MARRIED!  So hold tight to your Carny Britches! It’s gonna be a memorable ride!

Starting this post off with a Public Service Announcement:

Keepi Vaudeville & Sideshow ALIVE!
What we do is dangerous enough as it is. It doesn’t take a whole lotta scratch to help out. Seriously. $5 is not a lot at all. But it will help them get what they need to keep doing that shit that they do so damn well!!!

You are not donating. You are investing.
You get stuff. Aaaaaannnnd, you get to see them do it a little bit longer, keeping that vaudvillian tradtion alive. Wouldn’t it suck if you had to say “I remember when folks used to do this”.

The two projects I kicked in for this month include:

Sabrina Chap: We Are The ParadeSabrina Chap’s album, We Are The Parade
http://www.indiegogo.com/WE-ARE-THE-PARADE

for $10 you get a digital download.

And she periodically will do cover requests for donors!

Pretty Things Peepshow Tour Bus or Bust http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/prettythingspeepshow/pretty-things-peepshow-tour-bus-or-bust

“We need the help of our fabulous friends, family and fans. All the people who have come out to see our shows, everyone we’ve taken pictures with, who have cheered us on and hung out with us after the show, all those who want to see the show but haven’t been able to yet, all those who want to help support live entertainment and a piece of American Theater History. It is a call to arms to all those who want to help us keep the future of entertainment alive by reviving the past. ”

And remember, even if you don’t have the pennies to spark, you can still help out by spreading the word. that’s free. :-)

Now on to the list of upcoming shows!

Fri April 13
Ritz & Revelry in Richmond, VA

Ritz & Revelryhttps://www.facebook.com/events/332356423487594/

There’s nothing in the world that a good drink and a hearty laugh can’t fix. This month we’re putting the two together for an evening of slapstick comedy that will have your sides splitting.

The key to great vaudeville is comedy, which is why we’ve pulled together the area’s best quick-witted comedians for your enjoyment.

Bringing his ukulele and unique brand of humor to the Ritz & Revelry stage for the first time is Richmond’s own vaudevillian master, Mr. MARK SLOMSKI. Mark is currently the co-producer and master of ceremonies for the Slomski Cabaret, a live music vaudeville show with a focus on comedy, burlesque and sideshow arts.

Also making her Ritz and Revelry debut is a woman who needs no introduction…but we’re going to give her one anyway. She puts the DARE in daring! The FUN in funny! And the AWWW in awkward. It’s DC’s own sideshow girl, MAB JUST MAB!!!

Mab is a founding member of the nationally touring Accidental Circus and long time member of the award winning Cheeky Monkey Sideshow. A renowned glasswalker, escape artist, fire eater, blockhead and ukulele lover, she combines artistry and human endurance to bring you some of the finest vaudevillian entertainment around. Mab is also the tenured freak at DC’s notorious sideshow venue & museum, The Red Palace and has been featured in sideshow documentaries and books.

But the laughs don’t stop there! Because the Ritz & Revelry house cast will also be on hand to roll out a barrel of fun!

Featuring:
CHRIS CHAOS
THE GARTER SNAPS
ETTA PANCETTA
SALLY VON STREUSEL
And just added: OPHELIA DERRIERE!

Hosting this evening of hilarious hijinks is the funny lady herself, MISS MAGNOLIA JACKSON PICKETT BURNSIDE!!!

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the Canal Club during any show (just tell them you want to buy Ritz & Revelry tickets) or online at http://thecanalclub.com/online_ticket_center.htm

Vaudeville Galore and Mab, Just Mab Present:
Wild West Space Opera (in Space) With Dinosaurs!

A long time ago, in a gallery not too far away, millions of voices suddenly cried out in unison for awesomeness. Trapped in a world they never made, their hopes for entertainment were answered by a group of Big Damn Vaudevillians. Now, the spice will find a way to be with you and prosper in a single night too epic to be contained by a single genre. Prepare for your mind to be melded by a sexy stampede of sideshow, comedy, magic and burlesque at The Wild West Space Opera (in Space) With Dinosaurs!

Featuring:
Mab, Just Mab, “DC’s Own Sideshow Girl”, is a founding member of the nationally touring Accidental Circus and long time member of the award winning Cheeky Monkey Sideshow.

Sidetracked, vaudeville masters of wile and wit, bowl the crowd over with rapid fire, comedic storytelling. Recently returned from rocking out the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, these two women have performed on historical stages, doorways and tall ships. They rejuvenate the vaudeville genre…with badass sensibility.

Deepa de Jour is Richmond’s own delectable dish, with a different flavor every day! She has figured out her own recipes to create dazzling costumes and props, ranging from classically sweet to neo-burlesque with a BANG! With her extensive background in visual arts and material studies, she has translated her interests into the art of the tease and is constantly creating and learning new ways to tell a story from the stage in an imaginative and enticing way.

Larry “Doc” Volz has over two decades of experience surprising people with belly laughs and impossible inventions. His trademark “Amazing Elixer of Life” medicine show style antics and impossible inventions include teleporters, invisibility generators, instant hair growth machines that go horribly awry and much more. Doc is also winner of the first People’s Choice Award from the International Brotherhood of Magicians for Excellence in Stage Magic, the Stage Magic World Championship from the Society of American Magicians and the International Battle of the Hypnotists in Tokyo Japan.

And no Out-Of-This-World Adventure would be complete without the Space Moon Cowboy: Buster Britches!

This Is A Game Show

If you didn’t get a chance to catch Brandon Wetherbee‘s very first Game Show, you can check out the podcast version.  You can hear such comedic giants as storyteller S.m. Shrake & comdedian Jenn “Tits” Tisdale, and me, the sideshow girl who didn’t put her face in anything!

Added bonus: The Sweater Set!  My love for them knows no bounds.

Told you it was something a little different!

My body aches from rehearsing the hell out of my new glasswalking piece.

This new number is pushing me so far past what I normally do on so many levels.
I have cuts, bruises and scratches in new and exciting places. At one point, I couldn’t tell if that was a new scar or an old one. (How did a piece of glass end up exactly in an old scar?)

The table adds a whole new level of danger to the glasswalk.
Glasswalking had become, well, “easy” isn’t the right word, but definitely comfortable (and in a strange way, even comforting).
Getting up on that table the first time w/ all the glass, I suddenly felt the anxiety and apprehension I felt when I first started. There is no where to step off quickly if something goes wrong. There is nowhere to wipe my feet if a piece gets stuck (and there usually is at least one determined piece that sticks). And even though the table is longer than my old pile of glass, I have a more confined space to work with.

Another thing that wasn’t anticipated, since the table is six feet long, I needed more glass. Never did I think I would get to the point where 100 pounds of broken glass would not be enough. Over the years, after breaking new glass for every performance, my original glass pile has nearly doubled. I had been pouring off the extra when the bucket fills, so fortunately, I had a second stash.

When I first heard August Hoerr play this song, this number was all I could see. I knew almost exactly what I was going to do but it still has taken me longer to write this piece than any of my other routines. Getting it out of my head and into the reality that makes use of the laws of physics has been a challenge! And now it’s time to send it out to the world, see what happens.

Tonight, I’m test driving it at Clown Cabaret, and then officially premiering my brand new glasswalking number down in Richmond at Buster Britches Voodoo Sideshow on Friday.

Hope this works. Wish me luck.

Just don’t tell anyone, ok?  It’ll be our little secret.  ;-)

How many times have you said to yourself “I can do that!” after seeing a huge big name artist do an overpriced show? Have you ever wondered why some people who are doing simple tricks have larger crowds? Fatter hats? More shows? People have been studying the phenomenon for ages.

Now there is an instrument for EVERYONE!

Easy to pick up, hard to put down!
Travel Sized!

FACT! Ukuleles increase your sex appeal!

4 strings and the truth! The Incredible, Portable, Magical, Musical, Ukulele is now within your reach!
Learn the basics of making sweet uke love and leave this workshop well on your way to becoming a ROCK GOD!
Mab, Just Mab will show you how to get started on your road to uke love!
This is a class for beginners, and people who have held a uke once or twice.
There are a VERY LIMITED number of spare ukes, so it is strongly advised that you get your own (you won’t regret it!). If you buy a new uke, be sure to tune it up before hand, strings need time to settle in. Mab is available for email questions before the workshop. Not sure what kind of uke to get? There are plenty of affordable ones for under $40. But watch out! If you pay less than $20, chances are you have a uke that won’t hold a tune!

Mab recommends the Kala Dolphin Bridge Soprano Ukulele for about $40 online for beginners

Both workshops are available to both women & men!

Visit the workshops page for description, registration & payment options!
